THE GARDEN OF FALLING SANDS (2023)

In the Mexican city of Monterrey, a border city with the USA, a special form of Latin American cumbia music, "Cumbia Colombiana," has developed since the 1950s. The dances of this cumbia, characterized by slowed-down rhythmic shifts, are practiced predominantly by marginalized communities and are constantly evolving according to styles, trends, and the urgency of social circumstances. Here, vibrant, traditional dance begins as a ritual of identity and empowerment. Yolanda Morales and her team have created a utopian, magical space on stage: a garden bathed in a warm, yellow light. This place is fictitiously embedded within this other cultural space, within the barren, ecologically and politically crisis-ridden desert landscape of northern Mexico. Following intensive choreographic research in Monterrey, Morales, together with her team and dancers from Monterrey and Hamburg, is now performing at the Lichthof Theater. She raises questions about the permeability of borders and affiliations, given the inhumane effects of a globally operating economic system based solely on growth and profit. How can new rituals emerge that can foster common ground in our increasingly fragmented societies?
